2025 was a milestone year for Softopper® — marking 25 years of building dependable, retractable truck tops designed for real-world use. To celebrate our anniversary, we didn’t just look back—we pushed forward. From launching all-new products like the Softopper® Exo Truck Bed Rack® to expanding our Premium Black Twill offerings, 2025 was all about raising the bar on versatility, durability, and design. We showed up at industry-leading events, connected with the off-road and truck community in person, and partnered with athletes who put our gear to the test in real conditions. It was a year defined by growth, innovation, and staying true to what Softopper® has always been built for.

25 Years of Softopper®: built on experience

In 2025, Softopper® proudly celebrated 25 years of designing and building the original retractable truck bed top. What started as a simple solution for protecting gear has grown into a trusted product used by truck owners across every season, terrain, and use case. For a quarter century, our focus has stayed the same: lightweight design, dependable durability, and real-world functionality that works just as hard as the trucks it’s mounted on.

This milestone wasn’t just about looking back—it was about recognizing how far the brand has come by listening to our customers, refining our designs, and staying true to what makes a Softopper® different. From daily driving and jobsite use to weekend escapes and long-haul trips, 25 years of feedback and hands-on experience shaped every decision we made in 2025. That foundation set the stage for what came next: new products, expanded offerings, and smarter solutions built for the modern truck owner.

a year of innovation

With 25 years of experience behind us, 2025 became a year focused on expanding what a Softopper® setup can do. Every new product introduced was designed to complement the original retractable truck top—adding versatility, strength, and functionality without sacrificing the qualities of the design Softopper® is known for. The goal was simple: to make the Softopper® the ultimate truck bed accessory, delivering a setup that’s adaptable enough for daily use, tough enough for demanding conditions, and flexible enough to evolve with the way truck owners actually use their rigs.

The Exo Truck Bed Rack®: Expanding Softopper® Capability

One of the most significant moments of 2025 was the launch of the Exo Truck Bed Rack®, a product designed specifically with the Softopper® in mind. After 25 years of refining the original retractable truck top, the Exo Truck Bed Rack® was the next evolution, expanding what a Softopper® setup can do without compromising the features that make it unique.

Unlike traditional bed racks, the Exo Truck Bed Rack® was engineered specifically to integrate with the Softopper®. Its lightweight design pairs seamlessly with the Softopper’s aluminum frame, allowing users to mount rooftop tents, recovery gear, and accessories while still maintaining the ability to retract the top when needed. The result is a more capable, modular system that adapts easily from daily driving to extended trips.

The Exo Truck Bed Rack® was developed specifically to solve long-standing compatibility challenges between traditional bed racks and the Softopper®. The unique design and mounting method of the Softopper® make it difficult—if not impossible—for most off-the-shelf bed racks to work properly.

Many traditional bed racks mount in the middle of the truck’s bed rails or fail to account for cab-height fitment, both of which interfere with how the Softopper® installs and functions. Because Softoppers are engineered to sit at cab height, most universal bed racks simply don’t align correctly.

The Exo Truck Bed Rack® solves these challenges with a purpose-built design. Its bed rails sit flat on top of the truck’s bed rails, allowing the Softopper’s square bed rails to mount directly on top. The Softopper® bed rails are prepped with foam adhesive weather stripping that forms around the Exo Truck Bed Rack® rails, maintaining a proper seal and keeping water out. The rack is also designed to sit slightly taller than cab height, ensuring full compatibility with the Softopper® while preserving the clean, streamlined profile it’s known for.

The expansion of the Twill-verse

In 2025, Softopper® expanded its Premium Black Twill lineup to give more customers the option to upgrade to a refined, premium top without sacrificing the functionality Softopper® is known for. The expansion was driven by growing demand for a more elevated look paired with long-term durability—while keeping the same retractable, lightweight design.

The Premium Black Twill fabric features a triple-layer construction engineered for added strength, improved insulation, and a more structured feel compared to standard vinyl. Each Premium Black Twill Softopper® also comes standard with a dark tinted rear window, providing a cleaner, more streamlined appearance along with increased privacy.

Another advantage of the Softopper® system is its long-term serviceability. Every component of a Softopper® is designed to be replaceable, extending the life of the product and allowing owners to refresh or upgrade their setup over time. To support that flexibility, Softopper® introduced a Twill Canopy-Only option in 2025—making it easy for existing Softopper® owners to upgrade to Premium Black Twill without replacing their entire system.

By expanding the Premium Black Twill lineup and introducing new upgrade options, Softopper® made it easier than ever for customers to build a setup that matches both their truck and their lifestyle—premium in appearance, proven in performance, and built to last.

Engineered for Every Truck, Every Generation

With every new model year comes new trucks—and new opportunities to put Softoppers on the road. In 2025, Softopper® expanded its lineup to include 2025+ Ford F-150 short bed and 6.5 ft bed models, continuing our commitment to supporting the latest truck platforms as they evolve.

Softopper® offers one of the most extensive fitment lineups in the industry, with models engineered specifically for each truck’s year, make, model, bed length, and body style. Rather than relying on universal designs, we make the necessary adjustments to ensure every Softopper® follows the lines of the truck, sits at consistent cab height, and integrates cleanly with each generation’s unique design.

As trucks change from year to year—whether through updated body lines, new bed configurations, or revised trim levels—Softopper® adapts alongside them. Each new release is carefully developed to maintain proper fit, functionality, and compatibility, ensuring that every Softopper® delivers the streamlined look, weather protection, and ease of use customers expect, no matter the model year.

By continuing to expand fitment for new trucks, Softopper® remains focused on what matters most: a precise, purpose-built fit that looks right, works right, and holds up over time.

Connecting With the Softopper® Community

In 2025, Softopper® made it a priority to show up in person—connecting directly with the community and introducing more people to what Softopper® is all about. Attending industry events allowed us to meet Softopper® owners, talk trucks face-to-face, and see firsthand how customers use their setups in the real world.

Throughout the year, we participated in industry-leading events including the Salt Lake Off-Road & Outdoor Expo, the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California, and the Off-Road Expo in Costa Mesa, California. These events gave us the opportunity to showcase our products, answer questions, and connect with enthusiasts across different segments of the off-road and outdoor communities.

Looking ahead, we plan to continue attending events in 2026 as part of our ongoing commitment to the Softopper® community. Stay tuned to see if we’ll be coming to an event near you.

Looking ahead

2025 was a defining year for Softopper®—one that celebrated 25 years of experience while continuing to push the brand forward. From launching new products and expanding premium options to meeting the community in person and supporting the latest truck platforms, the year reinforced what Softopper® has always been about: building dependable, versatile solutions that work in the real world. As we look ahead to 2026, we’re carrying that momentum with us. With new ideas, continued innovation, and more opportunities to connect with the Softopper® community, there are plenty of exciting things on the horizon.

Why Pro Rider Cody Webb Trusts Softopper® On and Off the Track https://softopper.com/cody-webb-softopper/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 19:36:06 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=99240

A Champion Who Lives the Lifestyle

Professional motorcycle racer Cody Webb has made a name for himself by tackling some of the toughest races in the world. From the Erzbergrodeo in Austria to the Tennessee Knockout here in the U.S., his career is built on grit, determination, and a relentless drive to get better every day.

Living along Colorado’s Front Range, his days are filled with training, racing, and hauling gear across every type of terrain imaginable. That constant movement requires equipment that works as hard as he does—which is why he relies on the Softopper®. With its versatility, durability, and ease of use, it’s the perfect fit for a lifestyle that blends high-level racing with the unpredictability of Colorado weather.

Cody Webb’s Journey to the Top

Unlike most pro riders, Cody didn’t hop on a dirt bike at an early age. Instead, he grew up mastering trials riding, honing balance, precision, and technical skill. By the time he was 19, he transitioned into enduro and extreme off-road racing—a shift that would define his career.

His achievements include:

  • 3× AMA Super EnduroCross Champion
  • FIM Super-Enduro World Champion
  • 6× X Games medalist
  • 6× Tennessee Knockout Champion
  • First American to podium Erzbergrodeo (2016–17)
  • 2017 ISDE Gold Medalist
  • 2010 U.S. National Mototrial Champion

Despite the long list of titles, Webb maintains a mindset focused on progress, not resting on accomplishments. He often describes himself as an underdog—always hungry to improve, always pushing for the next challenge. That same mindset carries over into the gear he chooses: it has to be reliable, adaptable, and able to keep up.

Why Softopper® Works for Cody

When you live a life built around racing, training, and hauling bikes, you need a setup that works just as hard as you do. For Cody, that’s where Softopper® fits in.

Flexible Bed Space on Demand

Race days and training sessions mean bikes and gear are constantly going in and out of the truck bed. The retractable design of the Softopper® makes that process quick and hassle-free. When it’s time to load the bikes, the Softopper® retracts in seconds. Once everything is unloaded, it snaps back into place—covering gear without slowing the day down. For an athlete who spends more time riding than wrenching, that ease of use is a game-changer.

Durability for colorado conditions

Life along Colorado’s Front Range comes with a mix of sunshine, snow, rain, and dust—sometimes all in the same day. The durable construction of the Softopper® keeps equipment protected no matter what the weather brings. Snapped shut, it shields valuable gear from the elements and keeps the bed cleaner on rough trails or long hauls. Just like the rider who depends on it, the Softopper® is built to perform when conditions get tough.

Lightweight and practical

A topper that’s too heavy or complicated just slows things down. At around 35–40 pounds, the Softopper® is lightweight enough to handle easily, yet strong enough to stand up to years of use. That balance of strength and simplicity makes it a practical solution for riders who need to be on the move constantly.

SHOP CODY’S SOFTOPPER®

Webb relies on a 2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty—a heavy-duty workhorse that pairs perfectly with the Softopper® for hauling bikes and gear. Running the same truck?

Versatility that matches a champion’s drive

The story of Cody Webb is one of persistence, adaptability, and resilience—values that align perfectly with the Softopper® ethos. Just as Webb has climbed to the top of the sport through determination and hard work, Softopper® has earned its place as the original, go-anywhere retractable truck top by proving itself in real-world conditions.

For racers, adventurers, and everyday truck owners, the lesson is the same: versatility and durability aren’t just nice to have—they’re essential. And when a world-class rider like Webb puts his trust in Softopper®, it’s proof that this is gear built to perform at the highest level.

Built for Colorado: How Softopper Thrives in the Centennial State https://softopper.com/colorado-day-softopper/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 00:00:37 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=86159

Built for Colorado. Trusted everywhere

August 1st is Colorado Day, and for us at Softopper®, it’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a celebration of where we came from, what we stand for, and why our products perform the way they do. As a company founded and headquartered in Colorado for the past 25 years, our identity is deeply tied to the state’s rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and adventurous spirit. Every Softopper® we build reflects that heritage.

In 2000, Softopper® was born out of a simple but powerful idea: create a truck bed cover that’s tough enough for Colorado’s harsh elements, yet versatile enough to keep up with the active lifestyle of its residents. Hard shells were heavy and cumbersome. Tonneau covers were limiting. So we set out to build something different—something better.

From snow-drenched mountain passes to remote desert trails, the Softopper® was designed to handle it all. Our founders knew that if a product could perform year after year in Colorado, it could be trusted anywhere.

Today, Softopper® remains headquartered in Colorado, just miles from the very trails and roads that inspired our first designs. And while we’ve expanded and built a passionate customer base all across the world, our commitment to Colorado hasn’t changed. This is still where we design, test, and refine our products. It’s where our team hikes, camps, off-roads, and snowboards. And it’s where we continue to draw inspiration for future innovations.

Our community of employees, customers, and partners reflects the spirit of the state: independent, adventurous, and always ready for the next challenge.

Designed to Keep Up With Colorado

All-Weather Durability

Colorado weather is notoriously unpredictable. You can start your day under clear skies and end it in a snowstorm, thunderstorm, or dust storm—sometimes all in the same weekend. That’s exactly why the Softopper® is built to handle it all.

At the core of its rugged performance is our automotive-grade convertible fabric, the same high-quality material trusted by top automakers like Jeep®, Ford®, and Chrysler®. This isn’t your average canvas—it features a woven construction with a UV-stabilized PVC coating, making it exceptionally water-resistant and resilient against harsh conditions.

Whether it’s intense UV rays at altitude, freezing sleet, high winds on exposed ridgelines, or heavy mountain rain, this fabric has been rigorously tested to resist fading, tearing, rot, and mildew. It’s designed to protect your gear and keep the elements out, no matter how fast the forecast changes.

Supporting it all is a lightweight, rust-proof aluminum frame—strong enough to handle trail vibrations and weather extremes, without ever worrying about corrosion. Paired together, this fabric and framework system delivers true all-season performance for the real-world conditions Colorado is known for.

And with individually serviceable components, every part of your Softopper®—from hinges to tension bows—can be replaced. That means you won’t have to scrap the entire unit just because one part wears out. This topper is built to last as long as your truck.

Flexible Design That Adapts to Colorado Life

In Colorado, your plans—and the weather—can change in a heartbeat. That’s why the Softopper® is built to adapt. Its fully retractable design gives you the freedom to go from full bed coverage to open cargo space in seconds. Just fold it down and secure it with the integrated straps—no tools, no hassle, no need to remove the unit.

Whether you’re tossing in bikes for a spontaneous ride, loading up lumber after a storm, or making room for camping gear, the Softopper® transforms your setup to fit the moment. It’s like having two trucks in one—a secure, covered bed when you need protection, and a wide-open hauler when you need volume.

Need quick access? Side and rear panels roll up and secure, giving you multiple entry points without removing the top. Grab tools from the side, load coolers through the back, or let some airflow in after a muddy trail day. It’s built for how you actually use your truck—on the jobsite, in the mountains, or out by the lake.

Lightweight, Tough, and Built to Last

Strength doesn’t have to mean bulk. While many soft tops rely on heavy steel frames and oversized hardware, Softopper® uses a rust-proof aluminum frame that keeps weight low without sacrificing durability. Most models average just 40–45 lbs, which means one person can install, fold, or remove the entire unit with ease.

That weight savings matters, especially when climbing steep grades or driving at elevation—it helps with fuel economy, handling, and ease of use. And because the structure resists rust and corrosion, your topper stays in top shape season after season.

Celebrating Our Roots—and the Roads They’ve Taken Us On

Softopper® has been part of thousands of Colorado stories. For 25 years, our tops have helped people protect their gear, adapt to unpredictable weather, and make the most of every mile.

What connects our community? The need for reliable, no-nonsense gear that performs when it matters most. Our customers don’t just drive their trucks—they depend on them. And for a quarter-century, they’ve depended on Softopper®.

Being Colorado-based isn’t just about geography. It shapes our mindset. It keeps us focused on adventure, adaptability, and authenticity. We chase the wild, we embrace the unexpected, and we build for the real world—not just the spec sheet.

So this Colorado Day, we raise our mugs, our tailgates, and our campfire stories to the state that shaped us—and to the incredible customers who have taken us further than we ever imagined.

Here’s to 25 years—and many more to come.

Road-Tested and Podium-Proven: Bryce Tryon’s 3rd Gen Tacoma Build https://softopper.com/road-tested-and-podium-proven-bryce-tryons-3rd-gen-tacoma-build/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 12:15:17 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=74803

Fresh off a bronze medal finish at X Games 2025 in Salt Lake City, Bryce Tryon is rolling with a 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma that’s built for both the road and the lifestyle that comes with it. After years of refining his setup, the truck now features a range of upgrades that support his BMX career and off-the-grid travel. In this post, we’re taking a closer look at what his Tacoma build looks like today—from the Softopper® that keeps his gear covered to the performance-focused details that make it an all-around standout.

Premium Black Twill Softopper® in Action

One of the standout features on Bryce Tryon’s Tacoma is the Premium Black Twill Softopper®—our top-tier fabric option designed for truck owners who want more than just function. The 3-layer, OE-grade material offers a clean, matte black finish that pairs perfectly with the rest of his build. It’s weather-resistant, UV-stable, and tough enough to handle constant travel and changing conditions on the road to competitions. The Softopper®’s retractable design gives Bryce the flexibility to quickly switch between covered storage for gear and open-bed access when loading bikes or hitting the trail. For an athlete constantly on the move, the Black Twill Softopper® checks all the boxes—durability, convenience, and a sleek look that fits the rest of his truck.

Premium black twill key features:

  • 33% Acrylic Woven Black Twill Fabric
  • Includes upgraded dark tinted rear window
  • Compatible with existing boot covers

Lighting

Bryce’s Tacoma doesn’t mess around when it comes to lighting. His setup from Baja Designs is all about putting light where it’s needed—whether that’s early mornings on the road or late nights packing up from the trails.

Up front, he’s running the XL Linkable Bumper Kit, a five-light setup that delivers serious coverage with full adjustability. It’s mounted with a pre-load support bracket to keep everything tight, even when the terrain gets rough. This isn’t just for looks—it’s a system built for high output, extreme conditions, and total confidence behind the wheel.

Squadron-R SAE Fog Pocket Kit for Toyota Tacoma '14-23

Squadron Pro ditch light

In the fog pockets, Bryce swapped out the factory lights for the Squadron-R SAE kit. It’s a clean fit, made specifically for Toyota models, and throws a wide, useful beam that cuts through fog, dust, and bad weather without blinding oncoming traffic. Plug-and-play install, race-inspired performance.

For ditch lighting, he’s running a pair of Squadron Pros—compact, but packing 4,095 lumens each. Perfect for tight trails, switchbacks, or spotting gear around camp. Small footprint, big results. Just how Bryce likes the rest of his build.

wheels & tires

For a truck that needs to handle road miles, rough terrain, and everything in between, Bryce chose a proven combo: KMC GRS wheels paired with Toyo Open Country R/T Trails in 315/70R17.

Inspired by KMC’s hardcore beadlock line, the GRS features a simulated beadlock ring and a split-spoke design that balances form and function. It offers solid brake clearance, easy debris pass-through, and off-road-ready strength—without sacrificing street legality.

Mounted on the GRS is the Toyo R/T Trail, a hybrid all-terrain tire built to perform in the dirt while still keeping things stable and quiet on the road. The 315/70R17 size gives the Tacoma a beefed-up stance and added clearance, making it ideal for weekend trails or daily commutes. It’s a combo that looks good and works hard—exactly how Bryce built the rest of his rig.

For ditch lighting, he’s running a pair of Squadron Pros—compact, but packing over 4,000 lumens each. Perfect for tight trails, switchbacks, or spotting gear around camp. Small footprint, big results. Just how Bryce likes the rest of his build.

suspension

To match the demands of his setup, Bryce upgraded the front suspension with a 2.5” coilover system featuring dual compression adjusters. This allows him to fine-tune the ride on the fly—whether he’s carving through tight switchbacks or cruising pavement between events. The larger shock body increases oil volume, helping with cooling and consistency during long days on the trail.

Supporting that system is a set of aftermarket upper control arms with high-quality ball joints, designed to restore proper alignment after the lift and improve front-end strength.

The added clearance and improved geometry give Bryce better articulation without sacrificing handling or tire wear. It’s a suspension package that strikes the right balance between daily driveability and off-road control—exactly what you want when your truck pulls double duty.

From lighting to suspension, wheels to storage, every part of Bryce Tryon’s Tacoma serves a purpose. It’s a truck that’s not just built to look good in a parking lot—it’s built to travel, perform, and keep up with a fast-paced lifestyle on and off the road. After years of dialing in the right gear, Bryce rolled into X Games 2025 ready for anything—and left with a spot on the podium.

Whether it’s hauling bikes, chasing daylight, or heading to the next big ride, this build reflects what a capable Tacoma can be when every component works together. And with a Softopper over the bed, the gear stays dry, secure, and ready for whatever’s next.

Top Summer Trails and Campsites to Explore with a Softopper® https://softopper.com/top-summer-trails-campsites-softopper/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 20:08:45 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=74683

Welcome back adventure season, we've missed you!

Summer’s here, and it’s time to chase the kind of adventures that don’t come with a map. The sun stays out longer, the trails dry out, and the best campsites open up to those willing to go the extra mile. With your Softopper® on the truck, you’re geared up for the journey—no matter how far off-grid it takes you.

We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite camping spots and off-road trails for the season—places where the views are big, the crowds are few, and the only schedule is the one you make yourself.

Let’s get into it.

Alpine Loop-Colorado

If you’re looking for a true backcountry experience with jaw-dropping views around every turn, the Alpine Loop delivers. This 63-mile route winds through the heart of the San Juan Mountains, connecting the historic towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City. Along the way, you’ll pass towering peaks, waterfalls, abandoned mining camps, and high-alpine lakes that make it hard to keep your camera down. The terrain demands a high-clearance 4×4, and that’s exactly where your setup shines.

With plenty of dispersed camping spots along the trail, the Alpine Loop is made for those who want to slow down and soak in the solitude. Roll out your Softopper®, find a flat spot near an alpine lake, and spend the night under a sky full of stars. Just make sure you check the weather and trail conditions before you go—this one’s remote, rugged, and unforgettable.

Rubicon Trail-California

Often referred to as the crown jewel of off-roading, the Rubicon Trail is not for the faint of heart. This legendary 22-mile stretch near Lake Tahoe takes you across massive granite slabs, tight rock crawls, and water crossings that will test both your rig and your resolve. It’s a rite of passage for serious wheelers—and for good reason.

The trail’s brutal terrain means every piece of gear needs to earn its place. That’s where your Softopper® comes in. With cab-height coverage and durable materials, it keeps everything protected and accessible, no matter how rough the ride gets. Make it through the trail, and you’ll earn more than just epic views—you’ll earn bragging rights.

Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway-Kentucky

Tucked into the Red River Gorge region, the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway offers a mix of Appalachian charm and gritty trail action. This network of old forest roads and rocky climbs winds through dense woodlands, creek beds, and steep hill climbs—perfect for exploring Kentucky’s wilder side.

It’s a unique blend of scenic and technical, with primitive campsites scattered throughout the area. With a Softopper on the bed, it’s easy to haul your gear in and out while staying flexible for quick setup and takedown. For East Coast adventurers looking for something off the beaten path, this byway delivers.

Tillamook State Forest-Oregon

If you like your trails with a side of rain and mud, Tillamook’s got you covered. This Pacific Northwest gem is a sprawling forest packed with off-road trails, moss-covered trees, and enough slick clay to keep things interesting. It’s a go-to for wheelers in Oregon, with everything from mellow gravel roads to steep, rutted climbs that’ll put your traction to the test.

Browns Camp is a favorite basecamp in the area, offering access to a wide mix of trail difficulty and easy spots to pitch a tent for the night. A Softopper® makes it easy to load up for wet-weather wheeling, keeping your gear dry and your setup dialed in no matter how many puddles you hit. Just bring recovery gear—and a good attitude.

Team ST Picks

We asked the crew at Softopper® where they’d head for a summer trip—and they didn’t disappoint. These are the personal go-to spots from the people who live and breathe the Softopper® lifestyle.

Wheeler Lake- Colorado

This short but rugged trail packs a punch. Steep climbs, rocky ledges, and alpine views lead you to a quiet high-elevation lake surrounded by Colorado’s best.

Holy Cross- Colorado

Tucked deep in the Rockies, the payoff is just as wild as the trail—remote campsites, alpine air, and serious bragging rights. With your Softopper® in the mix, your gear stays secure while you focus on the crawl.

Devil's Lake State Park- Wisconsin

Devil’s Lake State Park offers some of the Midwest’s best scenery—no need to go far off-grid to find great camping and trail access. While not a hardcore off-road destination, the nearby scenic routes and wooded campgrounds make it a perfect base for soft-roading and relaxing weekends.

True North Base Camp- Minnesota

Built for adventure, True North Basecamp sits right on the edge of Minnesota’s Cuyuna mountain bike trails and rolling forests. With direct access to singletrack, lakeside campsites, and off-pavement exploring, it’s the perfect launchpad for a weekend in the woods.

Cebolla Mesa- New Mexico

One of the Southwest’s best-kept secrets, Cebolla Mesa sits high above the Rio Grande Gorge with jaw-dropping views in every direction. This quiet, rim-side camping area offers true solitude and a front-row seat to some of New Mexico’s most dramatic landscapes.

Glendo State Park- Wyoming

Nestled along the scenic Glendo Reservoir, this state park is a water-adventure paradise. Miles of shoreline, fishing spots, and open campsites make it a laid-back destination for anyone looking to unwind by the water.

Softopper® Compatibility Guide: What Works and What Doesn’t https://softopper.com/softopper-compatibility-guide-what-works-and-what-doesnt/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 21:52:40 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=64077

When it comes to outfitting your truck, we know there’s no shortage of accessories and gear to choose from. One of the questions we get asked most often at Softopper® is whether certain products are compatible with our tops. From bed racks and tonneau accessories to rooftop tents and toolboxes, it’s important to know what works — and what doesn’t — with your Softopper setup. In this guide, we’re breaking down some of the most common products customers ask about, so you can plan your build with confidence.

Team Players: Gear That Works with Softopper®

Drawer systems

A drawer system is one of the best upgrades you can make to your Softopper® setup. Whether you build your own or go with one of the many great options on the market, it’s a smart way to stay organized while keeping your gear secure and easy to access.

Compatibility Tip: As long as the drawer system doesn’t interfere with the bedrails and leaves at least 7 inches of clearance from the top of the bedrails to the top of the drawers, your Softopper® will have enough room for the folding frame to pivot and function properly.

If you’ve been looking for a way to add some in-bed organization without giving up flexibility, drawer systems are a great match.

5th Wheel trailers

Planning to tow a 5th wheel with your Softopper®? Good news—all Softopper models are compatible, with the exception of older Ridgeline tops (which retract backwards).

When the Softopper® is fully retracted, you may want to remove the back half of your bedrails to avoid any scratching during tight turns. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Remove the clamps securing the back half of the bedrails.

  2. Loosen the clamps on the front half slightly to allow for some movement.

  3. Press the pushpin to slide off the rear portion of the rails.

  4. Store the rear bedrails in a safe spot during travel.

This quick adjustment makes your Softopper® ready for the road—without interfering with your 5th wheel towing setup.

Tailgate bike pad

A tailgate bike pad is fully compatible with the Softopper® and remains a popular choice for hauling bikes without compromising your setup. Since the Softopper®’s rear window bar hovers just above the tailgate and locks into brackets on the end of the bedrails, the presence of a bike pad won’t interfere with the function or closure of the top. The rear panel hangs over the tailgate area, so it naturally drapes over the pad without needing adjustment. Even with the pad installed—and bikes loaded—you can still easily roll up the rear window panel of the Softopper® to access your gear or the truck bed. Whether you’re transporting bikes for a trail ride or just need quick access to the bed, this setup works seamlessly together.

Bed Racks

Adding a bed rack to your Softopper® setup is one of the easiest ways to expand your truck’s capability. Whether you’re looking to mount a rooftop tent, haul recovery boards, store fuel or water cans, or simply create more organized storage for gear, a rack opens the door to all kinds of upgrades. With the right rack, you can keep your Softopper® fully functional while unlocking new options for overlanding, camping, work setups, or everyday hauling.

Softopper Exo Truck Bed Rack

The Softopper® Exo Truck Bed Rack is purpose-built to integrate seamlessly with your Softopper® setup, offering added utility without compromising function. It mounts directly under the Softopper® bed rails and attaches to your truck’s factory rails for a secure, hassle-free fit—allowing full retraction and use of your topper. Made from durable 10, 12, and 14-gauge HRPO steel with a matte black powder coat finish, the Exo Truck Bed Rack rack is ready for anything—whether you’re loading up a rooftop tent, recovery gear, or extra storage.

Benched: What Doesn’t Make the Lineup

Headache racks are a popular add-on for protecting your cab window and securing long cargo—but they’re not compatible with the Softopper®. The structure of a headache rack interferes with the placement of the Softopper®’s front window. In some cases, this can prevent the top from seating properly or even compromise its secure attachment.

Tonneau covers and Softopper® tops aren’t compatible—both rely on mounting systems that occupy the same space along your truck’s bed rails. Because of this overlap, it’s not possible to run both at the same time. It’s one or the other—but if you’re looking for versatility, Softopper® tends to be the top pick.

Softopper® is not compatible with Ram trucks equipped with the RamBox® storage system. The built-in box design interferes with the placement of our bed rails, making it impossible to securely mount the Softopper®.

CarbonPro beds are not compatible with Softopper® tops. The composite material and enclosed design prevent our clamps, bolts, and nuts from securing properly. Since the inner walls are covered and may contain lighting or wiring, there’s no safe or accessible way to mount the Softopper® without risking damage to the bed—or compromising the integrity of the installation.

Softopper® tops are not compatible with Trail Edition Toyota trucks that come equipped with factory bed-mounted toolboxes. The built-in toolboxes interfere with the Softopper® frame, preventing it from sitting or operating correctly. However, if you’re willing to remove the toolboxes, the Softopper® will install and function like normal—offering the same protection, flexibility, and ease of use as with any standard bed.

While there are a few products that don’t work with the Softopper®, it’s still one of the most versatile and user-friendly options out there. With a lightweight frame, easy installation, and full retractability, the Softopper® gives you the freedom to use your truck bed how you want—without being locked into a permanent setup. It offers reliable protection, quick access to your gear, and the ability to remove or reinstall it in minutes. And while some products may not be compatible, there’s a long list of gear that does work great with the Softopper® making it easy to build out a setup that fits your lifestyle.

Driven by Dirt: The Off-Road Vixens Story

Girls Get Dirty Too!®

We’re excited to feature Off-Road Vixens Clothing Company as part of our Women and Trucks campaign. Launched in 2008 by two women who grew up riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, and anything with a motor, Off-Road Vixens was created to give women in motorsports and the outdoor world a brand they could truly connect with.

From the start, their goal was clear—build something for strong, confident women who aren’t afraid to break the mold. Their gear isn’t just about looking good—it’s about showing up with attitude, grit, and a love for dirt, speed, and adventure. Their signature trademark, “Girls Get Dirty Too!®,” says it all.

Today, Off-Road Vixens is a go-to name in women’s motorsport and outdoor apparel. They’ve built a powerful community that supports and inspires women of all ages to push boundaries and feel confident doing what they love.

Women & Trucks: Real Rigs, Real Stories

Our community is full of incredible women who don’t just drive trucks—they build them, explore in them, and rely on them every day. As part of our Women & Trucks campaign, we’re spotlighting a few of the women out there putting their Softopper® setups to work and pushing the limits of what a truck can do.

Meet Lissette – EMT, Long Island Local, and Proud Owner of The Covered Wagon

Born and raised in New York City, Lissette’s path to the off-road world started young. At just nine years old, a chance encounter with a 62 Series Land Cruiser planted the seed. Years later, that passion turned into reality with her first purchase: a brand-new 2006 Toyota FJ Cruiser—still in her garage today.

These days, she’s behind the wheel of a 2022 Tacoma Trail Edition, affectionately named The Covered Wagon. What started as a practical build quickly became a full-blown lifestyle. Her original plan to go the hard-shell route changed when she found Softopper®. After some research, she was sold—and hasn’t looked back since.

For Lissette, adventure is a constant. She’s camped out mid-shift at work, powered through mud bogs, and cruised the scenic drive-on beaches of Long Island—her favorite place to kick back with friends, salt air, and the sides rolled up in Safari Mode. But her favorite part? The community she’s helped build. What started with a friendship has grown into Long Island Toyotas, a group of 300+ enthusiasts heading out on convoys, fishing trips, and out-of-state truck shows all summer long.

Her setup is always stocked and ready—fishing gear, traction boards, comms equipment, and even a mattress and mini grill tucked away in her roof-mounted case. Whether it’s weekend adventures or weekday shift recovery, her Softopper turns her Tacoma into a mobile retreat. “It’s become my sanctuary,” she says. “A place to rest, to recharge, to play guitar by the water.”

For women looking to get into this world, Lissette’s message is simple: “Never stop dreaming. You just need the right tools and guidance. Stay prepared, stay safe, and go wild.”

Meet Denise – Flight Attendant Turned Trail Regular

Denise didn’t set out to join the off-road world—but her Tacoma had other plans. What started as a practical purchase for home renovation projects quickly snowballed into something more. Before long, she found herself off the pavement more than on it, and today she spends most of her time exploring, camping, and testing her build on the trail.

Her truck is dialed for versatility. Built to handle everything from technical trails to long-haul overland trips, it still works as her daily driver. That balance between rugged and reliable is key—and her Softopper® plays a huge part in it.

“The entire camp setup is built around the Softopper,” Denise says. It’s made sleeping in the bed easy, keeps her protected from the elements, and still gives her the space she needs for hauling when she’s not in adventure mode. Best part? She can operate it solo—whether she’s setting up for a quick overnight or packing for a multi-day trip.

Denise’s favorite spot so far? Moab. Running the Trifecta trail system pushed both her and her rig in new ways—and left her with memories she won’t forget. This year, she’s got trips lined up across Arizona, California, Tennessee, and Colorado, each one promising something unique.

Her truck’s always stocked with the essentials—portable air compressor, grease gun, recovery gear—and her advice for other women thinking about jumping in: “Don’t be intimidated. Everyone starts somewhere, and this community is more welcoming than you think.”

Why Choose a Softopper®? Best Alternative to Hard Shell Truck Caps and Tonneau Covers https://softopper.com/softopper-vs-hard-shell-tonneau-cover/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 21:35:26 +0000 https://softopper.com/?p=63994

Know your Options

When it comes to choosing the right bed cover for your truck, the options can feel overwhelming. Hard shell caps offer security but limit flexibility. Tonneau covers keep things low-profile but sacrifice space and accessibility. That’s where Softopper® comes in—a versatile, lightweight solution that gives you the best of both worlds. In this post, we’re breaking down the key differences between Softopper®, hard shells, and tonneau covers to help you decide what’s best for your setup.

Softopper® vs. Hard Shell Truck Caps

Built Like a Tank… and Just as Easy to Move

Hard shell truck caps might seem like a durable option at first glance, but their weight and bulk often become a hassle. Most require lifting equipment or a few people just to install or remove them, making it a permanent setup that’s hard to adapt. Once it’s on, it’s staying on—whether that works for your current needs or not.

  • Not easy to install or remove
  • Requires extra help or equipment
  • Locks you into one setup

Can’t Flex, Can’t Fold, Can’t Haul

One of the biggest drawbacks of hard shells is how little flexibility they offer. You can’t fold them up, retract them, or quickly remove them for a larger load. That means if you're trying to haul oversized gear—like dirt bikes, building supplies, or even furniture—you’ll have to work around the shell or remove it entirely.

  • Can’t fold or adjust on the go
  • Hauling tall or oversized gear is a hassle
  • One fixed setup limits your options

Big Price, Limited Payoff

One of the biggest drawbacks of hard shells is how little flexibility they offer. You can’t fold them up, retract them, or quickly remove them for a larger load. That means if you're trying to haul oversized gear—like dirt bikes, building supplies, or even furniture—you’ll have to work around the shell or remove it entirely.

  • Higher upfront cost
  • Not useful for all seasons or needs
  • Less value compared to more adaptable options

Softopper® vs. tonneau covers

Low Profile, Low Capacity

Tonneau covers might look sleek, but they seriously limit how much you can haul—especially when it comes to taller gear. Good luck fitting bikes, ladders, or all that bulky camping gear under one. With a Softopper®, you get full access to your truck bed’s vertical space—no need to unload or remove your cover just to make it all fit.

  • No room for taller items like bikes, ladders, or stacked bins
  • Can’t accommodate full camping setups or bulky gear
  • Limited access and flexibility when plans—or payloads—change

Adventure Not Included

Tonneau covers might keep things dry, but when it comes to turning your truck bed into a functional camping setup—they’re a no-go. With a flat, sealed design, there’s no room to build out a sleep setup, stack drawers, or even sit upright. Softopper® owners regularly turn their beds into full-on basecamps, with mattresses, storage, and enough headroom to make it actually usable. A tonneau might cover your bed—but it doesn't cover you too.

  • No space for in-bed sleeping setups
  • Limited room for gear organization or bed platform builds
  • Not enough headroom to sit, move, or relax

What makes softopper® different?

When it comes to truck bed covers, it's not just about coverage—it's about capability. Softopper® is built for the way you actually use your truck, whether you're hauling gear during the week or camping off-grid on the weekend. It offers the perfect mix of protection, flexibility, and durability—without the bulk or limitations of hard shells or tonneaus. Here's what makes it the smarter choice.

Retractability That Works With You

One of the biggest advantages of a Softopper® is how quickly and easily it retracts. Want to haul a tall load? Fold it back in seconds—no tools required. Want full coverage again? Just pull it forward and snap it back into place. It’s that simple. Whether you're loading up firewood, hauling gear, or heading out with bikes and bins, you're not locked into a single setup. You get total flexibility without having to remove the top or store it somewhere else.

  • Retracts fully in seconds
  • No tools or uninstalling needed
  • Adaptable for changing loads and daily use

Pack Higher. Stay Drier.

Softopper® gives you the full height of your bed—perfect for stacking gear, loading taller items, or even building out a sleep setup. And thanks to its water-resistant fabric and tight seal, your gear stays dry and protected through rain, snow, and sun. Whether you're loading up firewood, hauling gear, or heading out with bikes and bins, you're not locked into a single setup. You get total flexibility without having to remove the top or store it somewhere else.

  • Full-height coverage for tall gear
  • Water-resistant, UV-tested materials
  • Keeps your bed sealed and secure

Durable, Long-Lasting, and Worth Every Dollar

Softopper® is built to last for years—not seasons. Its rugged materials hold up to heavy use, harsh weather, and UV exposure. And compared to expensive hard shells or premium tonneaus, you get serious longevity at a fraction of the price. This is a bed cover that works hard and keeps working—without breaking the bank.Whether you're loading up firewood, hauling gear, or heading out with bikes and bins, you're not locked into a single setup. You get total flexibility without having to remove the top or store it somewhere else.

  • Heavy-duty construction made to last
  • Optional Premium Black Twill for added strength
  • Affordable option with more flexibility

Hear from customers who made the switch!
